Making UNC Bird-Friendly

In partnership with City Bird, our club is actively involved in monitoring bird-window collision data on UNC campus in order to assess what can be done to reduce bird collisions on campus. You can find information on how to report a collision, pick up a carcass, etc. on this page as well.

Why are bird-window collisions an issue?

Do you know that about 1 billion birds die in the U.S annually due to window collisions? Glass windows reflect surrounding foliage and the sky, and since birds cannot recognize them, they will collide into the windows and die due to internal injuries. Based on City Bird survey and iNaturalist data, over 200 birds encompassing 36 species have died on UNC campus due to window collisions over the past 3 years. Our club is dedicated to reducing bird collisions on campus to promote bird conservation, among our other conservation efforts aimed at preventing species decline on and around campus. You can check out our efforts below!

Bird-Window Collision Survey

In collaboration with City Bird, our club manages an active bird window collision survey that can be submitted by anyone using the form to the left when you come across any bird collision on campus. The information we collect is used to track and analyze the most frequent "hotspots" of bird collisions on campus. We also conducts a more formal survey during the fall migration period.

Window Stickers

Our club is working towards adding stickers to windows in places where we see the most bird collisions. We fundraise through events like GiveUNC and work with UNC Facilities to install these stickers, which help prevent bird collisions. Check out the Bird Collision Prevention Alliance website to learn more about how anti-collision stickers work and the solutions to bird-window collisions!
